This section describes how to view trace details.

Prerequisites

  • You need to have the platform-admin role on the KubeSphere platform. For more information, see Users and Platform Roles.

  • The WizTelemetry Tracing extension needs to be installed and enabled on the KubeSphere platform.

Steps

  1. Log in to the KubeSphere web console with a user who has the platform-admin role.

  2. In the upper right corner of the page, click the grid icon and select WizTelemetry Observability Platform.

  3. Click Tracing > Trace Query in the left navigation pane.

  4. Click the Trace ID (e.g., c76049d283c30cdfdf26e2485ba5fae32) or <Service Name>:<Root Span Name> (e.g., loadgenerator:GET) to access the trace details.

  5. In the upper area of the trace details page, view the basic information of the trace.

    Parameter Description

    Root Span Name

The global entry point of the trace, representing the initial request action.

    Trace ID

The unique identifier of the trace, used to track the complete request lifecycle in a distributed system (typically a 32-bit hash value), e.g., c76049d283c30cdfdf26e2485ba5fae32.

    Start Time

The time when the request was initiated.

    Duration

The total time taken from the initiation to the completion of the request.

    Span

The total number of Spans in the trace.

Each Span represents an independent operational unit in the trace. For example, 8 indicates that this trace triggered 8 independent operations.

    Service

The total number of services invoked in the trace.

    Depth

A metric indicating the depth of the call chain, reflecting the complexity of the request. For example, 3 indicates that the longest call chain contains 3 levels of service nesting.

  6. Under the Trace Timeline tab on the trace details page, you can clearly see the complete path of the request from start to finish and the execution duration of each Span through a visual chart, helping to locate performance bottlenecks.

    • Click the search box to search by service name or Span name. Search results will be highlighted.

    • On the right side of Services and Spans, click chevron-down to expand the direct child Spans of the current level, click chevron-right to collapse one level up, click chevron-down-double to expand all nested Spans, click chevron-right-double to collapse all levels.

    • Click a Span to view its detailed information. Click the row of the Span or the colored block on the left again to collapse the detailed information. For more information about Span parameters, refer to the OpenTelemetry official documentation.

  7. Click the Span List tab on the trace details page to view all Spans in this trace.

    • Click the search box to search by service name or Span name.

    • Click refresh in the upper right corner of the list to refresh the list information.

    • Click cogwheel in the upper right corner of the list to customize the information displayed in the list.
